    Dawn Black to Retire from Provincial Politics

    Vote "Yes" to Get Rid of the HST

    My friends and neighbours in New Westminster will soon receive their HST referendum packages.

    Like many of you, I am going to be standing up for what is right and voting "Yes" to scrap the Liberals' HST.

    Why? Because if we keep the HST we are going to pay more and get less in health care, education and other services. It is a massive tax shift onto the backs of families already struggling to make ends meet. Read more »

Black: Would the minister be aware of the situation north of the Fraser and Fraser Health region, at Royal Columbian Hospital — the situation that arose about a month ago where patients were treated in Tim Hortons? Not only was the emergency ward full, not only were the hallways full, but patients then were taken into Tim Hortons for treatment. It created quite a stir in the media and in the community.     D. Black: The 40th annual Hyack Festival is being celebrated in New Westminster this week. An important part of the festivities is the annual Victoria Day salute to Queen Victoria and the current monarch. The city's first such event was held in 1859 at the Royal Engineers camp and was highlighted by the booming of a salute from a naval ship's cannon. Read more »

    D. Black: This week is the 60th anniversary of Mental Health Week in Canada. The next time you're in a lineup or at the supermarket or a bus stop, look around and consider these facts. Two of every ten people in our country have or will have a mental illness. Mental illness can affect anyone at any time. It is the leading cause of hospital stays. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for B.C. youth aged 12 to 18. Depression is ranked as the leading cause of disability worldwide. Read more »
